Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Foundation

Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Foundation

Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) are among the UK's busiest and most successful foundation trusts. They have a long history of high quality care, clinical excellence, research and innovation.

The Trust is made up of five of the UK’s best known hospitals; Guy’s Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital, Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Royal Brompton Hospital and Harefield Hospital. They are also part of King's Health Partners, one of only eight academic health sciences centres in England.

LSBU has a long-standing relationship with GSTT, in providing educational and training provision, including: clinical placements for LSBU nursing students and student midwifes, apprenticeship provision and most recently training in digital and IT skills via the European Social Funded project Dagile.

George Bamfo, our Digital and IT Skills lead, has been delivering a series of staff training on our Level 1 Introduction to Cybersecurity qualification, with additional teaching in digital literacy to match the learners requirements.

George tells us more about the Dagile and GSTT partnership;

Our provision of training for the Trust has been built around the needs of a group of work-based learners who needed to develop skills to be more proficient in accessing and managing internal IT systems and processes, as well as learning about how to be safe online.  The training aimed to enable participants to undertake a range of administrative functions.

With some learners having basic digital skills, delivery has been face to face, using the training facilities provided by the Trust.  This has helped develop a strong relationship with participants. Sessions were practical, requiring each learner to have access to a computer. Some of the exercises included sending emails with attachments, accessing the payslip system and work-force rota system - tasks they had been struggling with.

Together with the Trust, we have built their confidence, motivation and appetite for learning.

More about our learners

To date, GSTT have referred 50 learners. A cohort of 14-learners completed the course in August 2021, and a further 36 participants completed the course in December 2021. There has been a 94% completion rate with learners awarded with an OCN London certificate. Additionally, the majority of participants have been women, over 50 and from ethnic minorities.

Most of the learners found the experience very rewarding having had a direct impact on their daily activities. But don't just take our word for it...
